Stara Zagora is on the upper Thracian Plain near Plovdiv. The earliest settlements here date back to the 7th millenum BCE. Many Neolithic and Calcolithis remains have been found. In 1968, two small Neolithic dwellings from the mid-6th millenium BCE were dscovered, the best preserved in Europe, and turned into a museum.
The Regional Museum of History is built above the Roman main street, the Cardo Maximus, of the ancient city Augusta Traiana that led to the southern gate of the city. Thrace became a Roman province in the year 46. The Roman cityof Augusta Traiana was founded around 106-107.
The Archeological Complex Museum of Religions is a former mosque built in the 1th-20th centuries. Excavations under it revealed a ritual pit from the Early Iron Age (8th-6th centuries BCE), a pagan sanctuary (2nd-3rd century), and a medieval Christian church (10-13th centuries).
The Antique Forum Augusta Traiana, the Roman theater, was built in the third century. It is still sometimes used for performances. Immediately behind it are the remains of the thermal baths from the second century.
